Friendly zombies enslaved by the living: an offbeat and enjoyable horror comedy developed by a group of genre film enthusiasts

What if zombies weren't violent and didn't pose a threat? While a virus has transformed part of the population into a mass of “non-living” wandering aimlessly, three corpse traffickers seek to clumsily take advantage of the situation. In a world populated by oppressed, hated and exploited walking dead, the trio of loser geeks find themselves confronted by a malicious secret organization. Fun and dynamic, as well acted as written, the film reveals the strengths of its creators. Born in the mid-2000s, the RKSS (Roadkill Superstars) collective made its mark with a few horror short films. The group composed of François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell was noticed in 2015 with its first feature film, Turbo Kid (A Mad Max by bicycle) before confirming his qualities in 2018 with the excellent Summer of 84 (a serial killer story sprinkled with atmosphere That). Further demonstrating their horror movie fan attitude, they released last May Wake Upa sarcastic but crude appropriation of the slasher genre. With We Are Zombies (adapted from the comic of the same name) it is the undead that they attack by skillfully playing with their codes. Between enjoyable gore scenes, a pronounced taste for retro aesthetics and an irony that does not fall into satire, RKSS assumes a tone of independent zombie film never serious but never ridiculous. We Are Zombies fulfills the contract brilliantly: a fresh and terribly effective popcorn horror comedy.
