Investigators said a man was shot by a Pittsburgh police officer after firing “multiple rounds” at police who responded to a domestic call in the city’s Garfield neighborhood Tuesday morning.Sitting on his porch just a block away from where police say they were involved in the gunfight, Joe Gaines said he heard it all happen. “It was just like a bunch of shots,” he said. Gaines says that was before he heard police arrive. Allegheny County police, who are investigating the incident, said it happened in the 4900 block of Kincaid Street, where city officers were sent for a report of a female being assaulted and an armed 20-year-old man.”At 11:11 a.m., an officer arrived on scene and encountered an armed male outside the residence. The male fired multiple rounds at police,” county police said in a statement. “One officer returned fire, striking the male multiple times.” Allegheny County police confirm when the first officer arrived, he was immediately under fire.“I believe it was an active gunfight in which both the suspect and the officer were moving,” county police Superintendent Chris Kearns said.Kearns said the Pittsburgh police officer shot the man in the leg. He was taken to the hospital, and investigators say they found a woman at the scene with facial injuries from an assault. Pittsburgh police chief Larry Scirotto says his officer’s actions will be reviewed, but he feels the officer did what was necessary.Scirotto described the officer as “a veteran officer who’s been on the force right around ten years. So he has quite vast experience in law enforcement, and he acted appropriately under the circumstances. And we’re just thankful that he wasn’t injured.”The officer is now off the streets while county police investigate. The man who was shot is reportedly in stable condition. For Gaines, the scene playing out in eyeshot of last summer’s standoff, where dozens of shots were fired, brings back memories that have become too familiar.“It’s kind of like normal,” he said. “Sometimes you hear shots, but when you hear a lot like that, you just wonder what’s going on.”
