While American political news has rarely been so intense, the distribution company Metropolitan Films has just dated the biopic of Donald Trump, The Apprenticea little before the presidential elections across the Atlantic. But in France, only, for now: see you on October 9 to discover this portrait, very critical of the businessman turned president, at the cinema.

Taking the name from his famous reality TV show, The Apprentice focuses mainly on his rise to power and his “Faustian pact” spent with an influential lawyer, Roy Cohn. Long before Donald Trump entered the race to lead the country, then: this is a “origin story”.

Unveiled at the last Cannes Film Festival, this feature film by Ali Abbasi with Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova and Martin Donovan has caused a lot of noise on the Croisette, but its American release is not yet assured. The official candidate of the Republican Party would do everything to stop it, and if small distribution studios try to acquire the rights anyway, nothing has been set yet.

Choosing a French release in the fall is no coincidence: the next elections are set for November 5, 2024, and Donald Trump will be at the heart of international news during this period. Not to mention that we will then be in the middle of ceremony season, between the Venice and Toronto festivals and the Golden Globes/Oscars 2025: Sebastian Stan is already praised for his portrayal of Trump in this film, a role that could well earn him a few awards.

In addition to dating The ApprenticeMetropolitan Films has announced plans to re-release another film dealing with American politics: Malcolm Xby Spike Lee, with Denzel Washington. Initially released in 1993, it will be back in French theaters from November 27, 2024, specifies The French Film.
