Marvel Studios is reportedly considering Shawn Levy, director of Deadpool and Wolverine, as a leading candidate for the new director of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Avengers 5. How motivated is Levy? THE RIVER approached Levy in Korea and asked him directly.

Destin Daniel Cretton from Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) was originally in charge of Avengers 5, but left in November 2023 to focus on other projects within the MCU. The film is scheduled for release in the US on May 1, 2026. Given that it will be a blockbuster featuring more than 60 characters, it would be good to start preparations as soon as possible, but a successor director has yet to be decided.

According to previous information, Marvel Studios is waiting for Levi's response and will be looking at other candidates in the meantime. THE RIVER, who met with Director Levi, asked, “I heard you are a candidate to direct 'Avengers 5'. Are you looking forward to it? How is the current progress?” Levi laughed and said, “You asked me two questions,” and talked about his good relationship with the studio.

“I've been very busy up until now. I also browse the internet, so I've seen those articles. I've had a great experience at Marvel, and I've been very busy with the production and finishing of this film, 'Deadpool & Wolverine,'” Levi said, talking about how busy he is. “In fact, we're still in the middle of finishing the film as I speak,” he continued, revealing that he had just given his approval (=permission, approval) to the final version of the VFX in the elevator just before speaking to THE RIVER. “I just want the best possible product,” he said.

While he avoided making any specific comments about the possibility of “Avengers 5,” he hinted at a future return, saying, “I am confident that my relationship with Marvel will continue in the future. Kevin Feige and Louis D'Esposito (Marvel Studios' head producers) feel the same way.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is expected to be the savior of the MCU, which has been in a slump. The opening weekend box office is expected to be the highest for an R-rated movie, at $160-165 million, and it is sure to be the biggest hit of the summer. If Levi can successfully reset the MCU's slump, it is quite possible that he will officially take over as director of “Avengers 5.”

Levi is currently on a world tour in preparation for the release of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” He's been extremely busy, so once the film's global release calms down, he'll have time to take a break and think about his next project.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” will be released worldwide on July 24, 2024.
