5-year-old Texas girl accidentally commits suicide and stepfather is arrested while out on bail for possessing guns as a felon

In Texas, a five-year-old girl accidentally killed herself with a gun she found in her home, authorities say.

Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded Saturday evening to the 8400 block of Parasol Lane, near Fairbanks North Houston Road, and learned the girl may have unintentionally committed suicide, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez .

The child was taken to hospital by ambulance and underwent surgery. She is expected to survive.

The girl's stepfather, Jason Nguyen, 33, was arrested for possession of a weapon and a controlled substance. He was booked into the Harris County Jail.

Other children and adults were in the home at the time of the incident, the sheriff said.

The incident remains under investigation.

Nguyen was convicted of several crimes and sent to prison in 2014 for being a felon in possession of a weapon, according to court records, according to Fox 26.

In August of this year, Nguyen was arrested again and charged with felony possession of a weapon.

He posted bond and no longer had that bond when his stepdaughter committed suicide, records show.
