37: The Shadow and the Prey, the new figurehead of French genre cinema [bande-annonce]

A truck driver picks up a young woman hitchhiking, who says her name is 37. She's clearly hiding secrets… and so is he.

A new wind has been blowing through French genre cinema for some time. We are thinking in particular of Vermin by Sebastien Vanicek, Eat the night of the duo Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, Acid by Just Philippot, The Animal Kingdom by Thomas Calley, Vincent must die by Stéphan Castang or even the highly anticipated The Substance by Coralie Fargeat, a Franco-American production. The next success could well be 37: The Shadow and the Preywhich comes out on November 20, directed by the neophyte Arthur Môlard. The story of a truck driver who picks up a young woman while hitchhiking. From these two lost beings will be born a mysterious morbid game.

Navigating between genres – science fiction, body horror, fantasy, gore… – these directors have in common that they never hold back, that they let their creative madness infuse their films. One could argue that these are most of the time their first or second films, that being new they have not yet integrated the washing machine of French cinema and its sometimes latent standardization. But, on the contrary, it is a very good omen that a real genre cinema emerges and survives thanks to young directors who are overflowing with energy and imagination.

This should be the case in 37: The Shadow and the Preythe first feature film by Arthur Môlard who, after a few short films that attracted attention, managed to make the leap. With a classic approach: a driver, played by Guillaume Pottier a hitchhiker, played by Mélodie Simina, a long journey… the film appears to be original, even eccentric. In the trailer, we meet the first, Vincent, a sinister thirty-something, and 37, a young woman over whom nothing seems to have any influence. From strangers, their relationship will very quickly evolve until it slips into a love story that will bind them in a kind of game that they develop. If we don't understand what it is, we guess that it is a bloody pact. Hunt or escape? 37: The Shadow and the Prey takes us with him on a long journey in a truck, above everything.
