28 Years Later: Cillian Murphy will ultimately not play in the sequel

The future of the Danny Boyle saga is becoming clearer.

The franchise of 28 is just getting started. The producer Andrew Macdonald told Empire Magazine this week:

“We wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. But he won't be in this new (2025) movie but hopefully there will be some Jim (his character from 28 Days Later) somewhere on our route He is currently executive producer and I hope we can work with him in some way in the future on the trilogy.”

Trilogy, because 28 years later is actually the start of a new trio of films.

The saga 28 will in fact continue straight away with a fourth film, which will be called 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. It has already been directed by Nia DaCosta (The Marvels) and will be released in theaters in January 2026. Aaron Taylor-Johnson will return as headliner. Finally, Empire Magazine reveals that a fifth film (as yet untitled) is already in the works.
