The actor revealed that he auditioned to play… George Harrison!
The Beatles conquered the world in the 1960s and Beatlesmania has settled into every home. So how can we explain that no biopic has been made before? There have been documentaries (the excellent series Get Backby Peter Jackson, for example) or fiction retracing only part of their career (Nowhere Boy on the youth of John Lennon, among others), but a real biopic recounting all the madness of the Beatles? Not yet. Surely because their success was so significant that only a genius, or a crazy person?, could tackle such a piece. And this one is none other than Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall, 1917):
“I'm honored to be able to tell the story of the greatest rock band of all time, and excited to challenge the notion of what constitutes a trip to the movies.”
Announced in February, four films – one for each member – will be directed by the Briton. A colossal project worthy of legends supported by the two survivors, Paul McCartney and Ringo Star, who are opening their entire musical catalog for the occasion.
Sam Mendes to direct four Beatles films (yes, one by Beatle)
But who to play these four Liverpool guys? Some tried their luck, like Fabien Frankelstar of the series House of the Dragon.
In an interview for NME granted on the occasion of the release of season two of the HBO series, Frankel and Matt Smith were asked what their five favorite albums were. While the first revealed that he had a preference for The Rolling Stones rather than the Beatles as his playing partner, the conversation ended up turning to the biopics in preparation. So whoever plays Ser Criston Cole slipped in a little information:
“I read the script to play George. I auditioned, but I think I looked a little too Latino. I ultimately think I couldn't have done it. But I would have loved playing George.”
Matt Smith as John Lennon and Fabien Frankel as George Harrison? Although he's not sure he got the role, the man who plays Daemon Targaryen reassured him and suggested he try his luck at starring in a Ricky Martin biopic instead.
In his place, Charlie Rowe is rumored to play George Harrison. He would be accompanied by Harris Dickinson (John Lennon), Paul Mescal (Paul McCartney) and Barry Keohan (Ringo Starr). Sony has not yet confirmed or denied this “ideal casting”. Even if nothing is certain for the moment, the great musical adventure will surely take place without Frankel. The guitar stays in the closet and we put on our Royal Guard cape…
The first part of this biopic is planned for 2027 in cinemas.
