West Bromwich Albion extended their unbeaten run in the Championship to five games with a victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

John Swift, who shined for the Baggies, fired the ball into the roof of the net in the first half to score the only goal of the game.

Albion, who rose to fifth place in the table, scored 17 shots, including a powerful free kick from Swift.

Wednesday’s bottom team failed to create clear chances and remains winless in the league this season.

Swift caused her opponents problems from the start, cutting in from the left early on and trying to find the corner with a shot that was narrowly deflected.

Moments later, Jed Wallace was played down the right and his cutback found Swift, who fired into the net from close range.

Wednesday recovered to respond and midfielder Tyreeq Bakinson attempted a shot into the top corner, but goalkeeper Alex Palmer’s expert reactions denied the Owls an equaliser.

Visiting goalkeeper Devis Vasquez then had his turn to impress, trying to deflect a low shot from Okay Yokuslu and then preventing Swift’s free kick from sinking under the bar.

There were very few chances in the second half for either side, with a long range shot from Swift and a header going over.

The visiting team finished with 10 men after defender Akin Famewo was injured in the 80th minute, when the Owls had made all five substitutions allowed.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan told BBC Radio WM:

“I knew that today the game would be very competitive.

“When you face a team with negative momentum, it doesn’t mean it’s going to be an easy game.

“It was important to recover the team’s solidity in defense.

“Always in the Championship, a clean sheet will help us, at least to get a point, and if you score the goal, to win the game.”
