The English actor explains why the final season may have been botched.
It is an understatement to say that there was great disappointment after the broadcast of the finale of Game of Thrones. A conclusion that has often seemed rushed. And for Kit Haringtonthere is a simple reason for this: everyone was eager to get it over with!
In a new interview with British magazine GQ, he reveals that the actors were on their knees and could not have done more than the 6 episodes of the final season 8:
“I think if there's a problem with the end of Game of Thrones, it's that we were all so fucking tired! We couldn't have gone on any longer.”
In the process, he expands and admits that in the rush, mistakes were made: “I understand that some people thought it was rushed and I can agree with them. But I think there was no other alternative. I look at pictures of myself at the time of this last season and I look exhausted. I look on my knees. I didn't have another possible season in me. After all, everyone is entitled to their opinion regarding the ending. I think there were mistakes, story-wise. I agree, there were interesting choices that didn't quite work…”
So when HBO asked Kit Harington to reprise the role of Jon Snow for a sequel, a new spin-off series Game of Thrones in the far north, he first refused. Then he visualized “an interesting and important story about the soldier after the war, told in a rather limited way“. Except that this short series has since been abandoned by HBO, because Kit Harington threw in the towel: “We spent two years developing the concept, but it just wasn't working out. Nothing excited us. So I ended up backtracking. We would have ended up making something not very good and I didn't want that.”
Not sure we'll see again Kit Harington in Jon Snow's coat one day…
