The best tennis players in the world head to Flushing Meadows to play the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the tennis year. The defending champions Iga Swiatek and Carlos Alcaraz are called to be the main favorites with strong fields in both the women’s and men’s draws.

Novak Djokovic will also return to New York after being unable to compete last year due to the United States’ Covid-19 vaccination policy, and will be seeking a 24th major title, a record he will extend. Home favorite Serena Williams will be absent after retiring from tennis at last year’s US Open, but her sister Venus was awarded a wild card at the age of 43.

Former British winner Emma Raducanu will be unable to compete due to injury, but there is hope for Andy Murray, who could recover from a hip injury in time for the first round which begins on August 28. Each match will take place at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows in New York.

Simona Halep was withdrawn from the US Open field on Monday due to a provisional suspension for doping.

The United States Tennis Association announced that Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion and former No. 1-ranked player, “was automatically withdrawn” when the tournament’s qualifying draw took place.

Halep’s place in the main draw at the women’s singles tournament at Flushing Meadows went to Taylor Townsend.

Andy Murray had been having his best season since his hip injury so far this year, proving himself in a second-round loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon. But it remains to be seen whether he will be fit after an abdominal injury.

Jodie Burrage has been enjoying a great season and is another player who has battled injuries throughout her career, but has broken into the top 100 and main draw.

Let’s take a closer look at British interest ahead of the draw at 5pm BST.

Cameron Norrie is still a top 20 player, but he has lost his last four matches since the first round at Wimbledon, but he will have to perform well to match his tournament last year, when he reached the fourth round.

Katie Boulter entered the main draw with a career-high 60th, reaching the third round of Wimbledon earlier this year, but she has yet to win a US Open main draw match.

Hello and welcome to the pre-draw preparation for the US Open which will take place at 5pm BST.

Novak Djokovic will return after missing 2021 due to America’s coronavirus policy, but fans will be hoping for a repeat of the thrilling Wimbledon final where he was defeated by Carlos Alcaraz.

Alcaraz won last year’s US Open against Casper Ruud, while Iga Swiatek defeated Ons Jabeur to win the women’s title.

The main draw of the US Open begins on Monday, August 28 at Flushing Meadows in New York. It will conclude on Sunday 10 September with the men’s singles final, which will take place one day after the women’s final.
