Search and rescue teams are trying to locate a skier who’s been missing since Christmas Day, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office said.

Due to conditions that forced officials to call off their efforts Sunday night, they had to resume their search Monday during the ongoing severe snowstorm.

The sheriff’s office identified the skier Monday as 43-year-old Rory Angelotta from Truckee. Angelotta works as the general manager of the Surefoot ski shop at Northstar Ski Resort and moved to the area from Colorado in October.

Angelotta was headed up the Comstock Lift Saturday around 11:30 a.m., which is when his pass was last scanned.

An emergency ping on his phone showed a short call made from the Northstar area at 11:25 a.m., the sheriff’s office said.

Angelotta was supposed to have dinner with friends later Saturday evening but he never showed up, the sheriff’s office said. His car was still in the parking lot, and his calls went straight to voicemail.

There was a significant delay between his absence at dinner and when deputies were notified, the sheriff’s office said. Searchers who have gone to look for him have not been able to find any tracks or evidence of where he could have gone.

While new to the area, Angelotta is an experienced skier and was believed to have avalanche equipment on him, the sheriff’s office said. Rescue crews spent much of Sunday searching for him using snowmobiles. The area he was at has an avalanche danger that is considered high.

However, the skier’s disappearance comes as a significant snowstorm continues to hit the Sierra through Monday. The sheriff’s office said rescuers face “high avalanche danger, strong winds, whiteout flurries, frigid temperatures, and heavy snow loads.”

“We are hoping to get information to lead us to where Angelotta may have chosen to ski the afternoon he went missing,” the sheriff’s office said. “Angelotta is described as very friendly and outgoing.”

He was last seen wearing a navy blue Fly Low jacket, blue helmet, and black goggles.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 530-886-5375.
