The New York Philharmonic heads to China for 5 concerts this summer

The New York Philharmonic will perform five concerts in China this summer, which it said will be the first visit to the continent by an American orchestra since 2019.

Outgoing music director Jaap van Zweden will lead performances in Guangzhou, Nanjing and Shanghai from June 27 to July 3, the orchestra announced Thursday. Baritone Thomas Hampson will join as soloist in Guangzhou and Shanghai.

Van Zweden's final concert with the orchestra as music director will be in Vail, Colorado, on July 20.

Van Zweden took over from Alan Gilbert as musical director in the 2018-19 season. He announced in September 2021 that the 2023-24 season would be his last. Gustavo Dudamel will take over but won't start until 2026-27.

Van Zweden will become musical director of the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra from 2026-2027.
