Action blockbusters, animated films, crazy superheroes, epic westerns and Monte Cristo: there will be something for everyone.
In the wake of a delightful month of May – more than 15 million entries driven by the exceptional success ofA little something extra – the cinemas of France are looking forward to summer with excitement. It must be said that the year 2024 has, overall, been quite gloomy: -11% attendance compared to the previous year for the moment and a few unexpected flops like Furiosa (Barely 800,000 entries to date). But the summer period which is opening should once again fill the cinemas between June and August, thanks to some very, very anticipated hits announced. Enough to reproduce the phenomenon Barbenheimer of summer 2023? We set the agenda.
Vice-Versa 2directed by Kelsey Mann – June 19
With the voices of Charlotte Le Bon, Amy Poehler and Adèle Exarchopoulos
Will the enormous historical success of the sequel in the United States be replicated in France? With 155 million dollars in revenue at the US box office and already 300 million worldwide in a single weekend, Vice-Versa 2 arrives with us with a formidable reputation. The reviews are excellent and all the planets are aligned for families to flock to the cinemas in France. It could even beat the nice score of the first part: 4.3 million admissions in France in 2016.
the count of Monte Cristodirected by Delaporte and De La Patellière – June 28
With Pierre Niney, Bastien Bouillon and Anaïs Demoustier
6 million cumulative admissions for the two films dedicated to Three Musketeers in 2023. The cloak and dagger has found colors. So will this new novel adaptation by Alexandre Dumas do as well? In any case, after the cardboard Fiasco on Netflix, Pierre Niney will arrive as a superstar on the big French screens, after a screening in Cannes which was widely enthusiastic.
The Hennedricks Familydirected by Laurence Arné – June 26
With Laurence Arné and Dany Boon
He is one of the kings of the box office in France: Dany Boon returns with a new tender and amusing family comedy, signed by his new partner. The portrait of a blended family which could well be the surprise hit of the summer.
Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1directed by Kevin Costner – July 3
With Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller and Sam Worthington
If the heyday of the western in cinema belongs to the past, Kevin Costner tries it with this epic fresco in several parts, taking place over a period of 15 years before and after the Civil War. A realistic and romantic painting of the conquest of the West which could well appeal to (many) fans of the series Yellowstone.
Despicable Me 4directed by Patrick Delage and Chris Renaud – July 10
With the voices of Gad Elmaleh and Audrey Lamy
Gru has a baby. He who already had daughters (Margo, Edith and Agnès) sinks a little deeper into a life of a tidy father with Gru Junior… The most lucrative saga in the history of animation (4 billion revenues) returns to theaters this summer. It has already attracted 20 million French spectators (in 5 films) since 2010 and has never had less than 3 million admissions in France (that was for the first). Suffice it to say, success is already assured.
Twistersdirected by Lee Isaac Chung – July 17
With Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell
Attention cult film on the return! The tornado chasers return to service 30 years later, for a sequel that promises to take everything away. The film by Jan de Bont (Speed) from 1996 had collected nearly $500 million at the box office and attracted 2.5 million spectators to French cinemas. Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton are no longer there to carry the film, but this sequel will be able to count on the growing star power of Glen Powell, after the success of Top Gun 2 And Anyone But You.
Deadpool & Wolverinedirected by Shawn Levy – July 24
With Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman
It is shaping up to be the biggest potential success of the summer: after an insane promotion, American forecasts are counting on a historic launch worth more than $200 million. Marvel studio is seriously counting on the duo to relaunch itself. Logan and Wade could well be the Barbenheimer from summer 2024.
Largo Winch: The Price of Moneydirected by Olivier Masset-Depasse – July 31
With Tomer Sisley, James Franco and Clotilde Hesme
It is the emblem of the French action film. Fifteen later, here is Largo again in a new adaptation of the famous comic strip. An adventure that promises to be exhilarating and impressive. The first two parts had accumulated more than 3 million admissions here and the billionaire gentleman should still attract crowds to the theaters.
Trapdirected by M. Night Shyamalan – August 7

A Shyamalan film is always an event. After the great success of Knock at the Cabinthe filmmaker returns with this slightly crazy thriller, behind closed doors in a concert hall, with a serial killer and father… But where is the twist?
Alien: Romulusdirected by Fede Alvarez – August 14
With Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced and David Jonsson Fray
Without a doubt the most anticipated film of the month in a weaker August. The xenomorph creature resurfaces in an abandoned space station, and a new heroine (Cailee Spaeny) takes up the torch from Sigourney Weaver. So the saga Aliento 12 million spectators in France (in six films), Does she still have any in her stomach?
Emilia Perezdirected by Jacques Audiard – August 21
With Karla SofÃa Gascón, Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez
Quadruple prize for acting at Cannes, Jacques Audiard's latest madness impressed the Croisette last month. Will she also be able to excite the public? The hyper-glamorous casting (Selena Gomez in the lead) should help boost entries for this astonishing musical. Of Rust and Bonehis biggest success, had 2 million admissions in France (in 2012).
The Crowdirected by Rupert Sanders – August 21
With Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs
30 years later, has the curse been lifted? In any case, Eric Draven will resume his supernatural ride in the most gothic of avenger films. Maybe not the biggest hit of the summer, but the comeback of The Crow will not fail to get people talking. In 1994, 1.3 million fans visited French theaters.
