Spanish star Jenni Hermoso insisted she “didn’t enjoy it” after Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales kissed her on the lips.
The incident occurred when Hermosa was on the podium after Spain defeated England in the Women’s World Cup final thanks to a goal by Olga Carmona.
After FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented her with her medal, Hermosa received a hug from Mr. Rubiales, who held her up.
A brief conversation between the pair ensued, before Rubiales grabbed Hermoso from behind and kissed her on the lips.
Outrage quickly spread on social media, with soccer fans accusing Mr. Rubiales of inappropriate behavior. Former England international Casey Stoney tweeted: “Would I kiss a male player like that? This is not OK.”
Asked about the moment, Hermoso told the Spanish television network La 1: “Eh… yes, I didn’t enjoy that.”
Mr. Rubiales was asked about the incident and said Radius Brand that it was simply “two people who had a small show of affection” and that he would not notice the “idiocy”, referring to those outraged by his behaviour.
“The kiss with Jenni? There are jerks everywhere,” she said. “When two people have a small token of affection, we can’t listen to crap. We are champions and that is what I have left”.
The World Cup adds to the glittering career of the 33-year-old Hermoso, who has spent successful seasons with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona and currently plays for Mexican team Pachuca.
Carmona’s first-half goal epitomized Spain’s style of football and was ultimately enough for Spain to edge past the Lionesses in Sydney, avenging their defeat in last year’s Euro Cup quarter-final.
Hermoso saw a penalty saved in the second half by England goalkeeper Mary Earps, but the Lionesses were unable to find an equalizer, with Jorge Vilda’s side holding on for victory.
