Paramount is reportedly banking on a prequel, going back in time to before humanity made contact with extraterrestrial populations.
Where is the saga? Star Trek at Paramount? While the 60-year-old franchise is still being released on the small screen to boost the Paramount+ platform, its cinematic counterpart has been at a standstill for Star Trek Beyond (2016) which had only generated $385.6 million worldwide. Since then, Paramount has tried different options to revive the Enterprise machine. Even Quentin Tarantino almost tried it. But in the end nothing came to fruition.
The Hollywood Reporter reports today that the studio still has two films in the pipeline. Star Trek still in development.
There is of course a possible sequel to the crew of Chris Pine. A Star Trek 4 with Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña, who could return to service, as announced in 2022. Except that since then, the director Matt Shakman left the ship in favor of the Fantastic Four and Paramount bets on the creator of The Flight AttendantSteve Yockey, to try to complete the script for the film, presented as the final voyage of the Pine crew.
The other project seems more exciting and could well be the studio's priority. It would be a prequel film, which would go back to the origins of the Federation. A Star Trek which would talk about the first contacts of humanity with extraterrestrials and the formation of this famous Federation at a time when Starfleet did not yet exist. A feature film on Earth, therefore, for the most part. The director ofAndor, Toby Haynesis responsible for supervising a scenario of Seth Grahame-Smith. According to THR, Paramount sees the project as an entry point for new fans who are unfamiliar with Star Trek and thus would not need to know decades of mythology to go there.
No release date or cast set yet, but the film is in pole position to be the next Star Trek to be released in theaters, concludes the Hollywood Reporter.
