‘Plate It, Pittsburgh!’: Catch of the Day

Very Local: ‘Plate It, Pittsburgh!’ challenges 2 local chefs to reel in fresh dishes

You’re going to want to “catch” this episode. On this episode of “Plate It, Pittsburgh!,” two local chefs compete in a fish-themed contest, needing to make three courses of seafood-inspired dishes, fully sourced from Wholey’s in the Strip District. They have 15 minutes and just $100 to gather all of their ingredients. Ivan Gil-Silva is the owner and chef of Mi Empanada in Lawrenceville. He has lived in Pittsburgh for 21 years, originally from Argentina. His parents moved his family to Pittsburgh from Argentina when he was young. Gil-Silva prides himself on his ability to come up with a delicious dish with just about any combination of ingredients, that can appease everybody. Nate Schoedel is the owner and chef of The Speckled Egg. Schoedel is a Pittsburgh native, and started his culinary journey working in a diner when he was young. His mother ran multiple restaurants and bars, and one day needed his help on the line during a particularly busy, 25-cent wings night, and the rest is history. He loves taking his dishes to the limit and specializes in breakfast/brunch foods. The winner walks away with the “Plate It, Pittsburgh!” tomato trophy and money for the charity of their choice.
