SRINAGAR: Three Hizbul Mujahideen affiliates have been arrested in connection with the October 6 attack on BJP’s district vice-president Ghulam Qadir in Ganderbal’s Nunar area in which one terrorist and a cop were killed. The trio had come in contact with terror operatives in south Kashmir and were tasked with preparing a hit list of local politicians and attack them, J&K Police said in a statement on Monday.
Following the attack, a case was registered under relevant sections of the IPC, and UAPA and IEA Acts at Ganderbal Police station and a probe launched, a police officer said while explaining how the case was cracked.
“During the investigation, the involvement of a hospital security guard, Qaiser Ahmad Sheikh from Ganderbal’s Serch area, was revealed. During interrogation, however, he tried to dodge the questions. Technical details sought through ESU brought to light some startling facts and after sustained questioning on October 30, Sheikh confessed of being an active Hizb member and instrumental in the attack,” the officer said, adding that Sheikh was subsequently arrested.
Based on Sheikh’s disclosure, one pistol, a magazine with three rounds of ammunition and a Pakistani flag were recovered. “On further questioning, Sheikh led investigators to two of his associates — Hilal Ahmad Mir of Bernbugh Kangan, working as an ATM guard at SKIMS; and Asif Ahmad Mir of Serch, a private security guard at SKIMS — who were also arrested. A Chinese pistol and ammunition, two detonators, Pakistani flags and other incriminating material were recovered from the duo,” the cop said.
