NEW DELHI: After granting permission to proceed against Kunal Kamra for virulently criticising the Supreme Court, attorney general K K Venugopal on Friday gave consent for another contempt proceedings against the stand-up comedian for his tweet against the chief justice.
In his consent letter to a lawyer, Venugopal said the tweet “is to deliberately insult the Chief Justice of India which would equally be an insult to the Supreme Court of India itself, which the Chief Justice heads. The said tweet is grossly vulgar and obnoxious and I have no doubt that it would tend to lower the authority of the Supreme Court of India as well as undermine the confidence that the litigant public have in the institution of the Supreme Court itself”.
Unfettered by the contempt petition filed against him in the Supreme Court after Venugopal permitted the proceedings, Kamra on Wednesday tweeted a picture of two fingers in reference to CJI.
A UP-based lawyer then approached the AG seeking its prior approval to file contempt proceedings against the comedian.
