The actor will take up the torch from Richard Donner to direct this sequel.

Three decades after the release of the first film in cinemas in 1987, Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh are preparing to return to service for one last (?) mission. While Richard Donner – who had directed the four feature films Lethal Weapon – died, it is Mel Gibson who takes the reins and will achieve Lethal Weapon 5.

Appearing on Steven Oxley's podcast, he confirms that the film is still in preparation. Even though it's been years now, he assures that it is still planned: “I will direct the fifth film in the saga The lethal Weapon. Richard Donner, who directed the other four, has sadly passed away and he was a good friend of mine. He, in a way, charged me with coming full circle with this film. So it will be an honor for me to do it.”.

Warner Bros.

Mel Gibson reveals that Richard Donner had “We were well advanced on the script, so we used what already existed and continued to work on it. I'm pretty happy with it.“It immediately sets the general tone of Lethal Weapon 5, which he describes as a film “funny” but “quite serious“and who will approach “some difficult themes”.

Still no filming or release date.
