We are heading into the final two weeks of the transfer window and Manchester United will be hoping there is still a signing or two to come at Old Trafford.
Erik ten Hag has added Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund to his ranks this summer but Monday night’s opening Premier League game of the season against Wolves, which saw the Reds win 1-0 thanks to a Raphael Varane header, highlighted potential squad gaps.
An extra defensive midfielder to help support and add competition for Casemiro seems the most pressing issue and United have been linked with a move for Fiorentina star Sofyan Amrabat for much of the transfer window. But Premier League rivals Liverpool have now reportedly entered the fray as the Reds wait to see if there are any departures which free up funds to secure further additions.
It remains to be seen where Amrabat ends up with the Morocco international looking destined to leave the Serie A side. United have also been linked with Everton’s Amadou Onana as well as Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard. But with Harry Maguire and Dean Henderson now set to stay at Old Trafford, any more new faces could rest on the likes of Donny van de Beek and Scott McTominay departing.

Amrabat ‘says yes’ to move
Sofyan Amrabat has already said ‘yes’ to a United move with Liverpool hoping to hijack a move, according to Fabrizio Romano.
United have been linked with the Moroccan all summer and Erik ten Hag is open to midfield reinforcements, dependent on player sales.
Amrabathas been hoping for the move to United since June, Romano adds, but the delay in getting a deal could open the window for other sides.

The 20-year-old joined United earlier this month but will miss the first few weeks of the season after a back issue was detected during his medical.

Tuchel on Pavard
Thomas Tuchel insists he is “fully counting” on Benjamin Pavard and will continue to do so amid reported transfer interest from United.
Reports have suggested that Pavard would like to leave Bayern and test himself in the Premier League. However, Tuchel insists he hasn’t been informed of the defender’s stance, adding that no offer has come through.
“Benji hasn’t communicated to me that he really wants to leave. As of now, there hasn’t been an offer. He’s our player and gets full support. Until that changes, we’re fully counting on him.”

OPINION: United are about to face their biggest tests of the Ten Hag era on and off the pitch
“Erik ten Hag claimed United were ready for Wolves but they did not look it. Perceptions can alter suddenly but before the Wolves win uncertainty still lingered over too many of the manager’s signings. Antony is a €100million work in progress, Mason Mount has underwhelmed and, compared with his peers Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo, is an underwhelming addition. Rasmus Hojlund is injured and so is Tyrell Malacia, the first through the door last summer.”

OPINION: Antony might be keeping his United starting role for just one reason
“Antony was poor against Wolves and he certainly wasn’t the only one, but he’s got more to prove than most. The pressure is bound to increase on him this term if he performs like he did last season and it’s up to him to contribute more. It would be an inadvisable, knee-jerk reaction to remove him from the starting line-up on the back of the Wolves game, but if more of the same is seen over the next few months, there would be a case for him to lose his starting role. The obvious problem is the lack of depth on the right side. Antony has nobody challenging him for his position because despite bright cameos, Facundo Pellistri is not trusted and Jadon Sancho is best on the left flank.”

OPINION: Ten Hag knows why Gravenberch won’t solve United midfield problem
“Sofyan Amrabat is a destroyer, capable of sitting deep and doing the ugly side of the game. Bayern Munich ace Ryan Gravenberch, on the other hand, is not. The Dutchman, who worked with Erik ten Hag at Ajax, is once again being linked with a move to Old Trafford after a challenging first season in Germany. Gravenberch, 21, developed at a rapid rate under Ten Hag, earning himself an attractive move to Bayern in June last year. But after making the majority of his appearances from the bench last season, it is thought he could move elsewhere. United, amid their need for another midfield signing, are being linked with his signature again. However, even by Ten Hag’s own admission, Gravenberch is not the defensive midfielder they require.”

Tuchel ‘blocks’ De Gea move
According to German reporter Florian Plettenberg, as cited by The Peoples Person, the prospect of former United goalkeeper David de Gea joining Bayern Munich is now ‘off’.
It had been claimed that the German outfit were exploring the prospect of signing the former Reds shot-stopper after his exit from Old Trafford earlier this summer. He was among a cluster of goalkeepers being considered to cover for Manuel Neuer during his period of absence through injury.

‘Lukaku should join United on loan’
Dwight Yorke thinks United should re-sign former striker Romelu Lukaku on loan…
“Romelu Lukaku is absolutely still good enough to play for a top-six club. I think United or Tottenham should take Lukaku on a short-term loan deal and agree to pay a certain amount of his wages,” he told OLBG.
“As much as people say about Lukaku, he has a very impressive goalscoring record and he doesn’t get as much credit as he deserves. If you have a fired-up Lukaku who wants to play for you, he’s a match-winner and a handful for any opponent in the world.
“Man United have invested heavily in Rasmus Hojlund, but if you want to compete with the best then Lukaku is that player who can score 15 to 20 goals in a season, which is priceless and hard to find in today’s game. Lukaku is still only 30 years old and a proven goalscorer, I think whoever gets him on a short loan deal will have done good and subtle business.”

United want three more sales
United intend to sell at least three more players before the transfer window closes but Harry Maguire’s move to West Ham has stalled.
Eric Bailly and Brandon Williams have both been told they are free to leave permanently if a suitable offer arrives. Bailly has generated some interest from clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia.
Bailly, 29, had his squad number revoked last week while Williams, 22, is fourth-choice left-back and was informed it is in his interests to leave and get regular playing time elsewhere.

No approach made for Onana
United would need to ‘break the bank’ to sign Amadou Onana, according to the Liverpool ECHO.
The article claims that contrary to some reports elsewhere, Everton have not had an enquiry over the past few days from United about the defensive midfielder.
It’s said Everton are under no pressure to sell players and Goodison Park chiefs value Onana higher than compatriot Romeo Lavia, who is set to move from Southampton to Chelsea for £60million.

United release statement on Greenwood
United say they have still not made a decision on the future of Mason Greenwood.
High-ranking officials at United said the club planned to communicate the result of a six-and-a-half month investigation on Greenwood before the start of the season but they delayed the announcement.
Greater Manchester Police announced on February 2 that charges against Greenwood, 21, had been dropped. Greenwood had been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. He always denied all allegations.

Why Greenwood decision is taking so long
It is in keeping with United’s handling of the Mason Greenwood situation that when a statement was released it did not include a decision.
Club sources confirmed more than two weeks ago the information from their six-month investigation into Greenwood had been gathered. In a statement released on Wednesday afternoon, United stated: “The fact-finding phase of our investigation is now complete, and we are in the final stages of making a decision on Mason’s future.”
A source close to the United hierarchy said other factors had come into play since the original deadline had been set and that consulting United women’s players after the World Cup was not the reason for the delay.

Wolves defender makes United admission
Max Kilman felt Wolves should have taken something from Old Trafford after an impressive performance against Manchester United.
Gary O’Neil’s new side created opportunities on Monday night but were unable to take their chances. It proved costly when Raphael Varane headed in the winner for United.
Despite the disappointment in defeat, Kilman was pleased with the performance and will take positives from that game. He also felt Wolves should’ve been awarded for Andre Onana’s challenge in stoppage time.

Mullin feared death after clash with United player
Wrexham striker Paul Mullin feared death when puncturing his lung in a friendly against United.
United played Wrexham in a pre-season friendly in San Diego on July 26 and the game was intended to give academy youngsters minutes against last season’s National League champions, who are now owned by Hollywood stars.
But unfortunately, the game was marred when Nathan Bishop collided with Mullin in a challenge that punctured his lung.
