Maine community college enrollment has increased 12% since the state created a free tuition program. This has led to greater demand for housing in an increasingly expensive rental market, Hobbs said.

Maine lawmakers are considering a potential on-campus housing addition to the state’s seven community colleges.
Hobbs said on-campus housing “should be made more accessible to all students, so that finding off-campus housing is not added to the list of challenges students already face.”
