“I was very surprised when I read the script.”
Before chasing the terrifying Nicolas Cage disguised as a serial killer straight out of hell in Longlegsit was she who was being pursued by invisible and unknown forces in It Follows. In 2015, Maika Monroe plays Jay, a teenage girl whose life turns into a nightmare after having sex with her boyfriend. Directed by David Robert Mitchell (Under the Silver Lake), It Follows had established itself as a disturbing horror and thriller film, shaking up the cinematic landscape of this very codified genre. Almost ten years later, the duo is doing it again with a sequel mysteriously titled They Follow.
It Follows: The scariest movie I've seen in a long time [critique]
Since the announcement last year, Maika Monroe has not escaped the questions of fans, impatient to know the plot of the project. In full promotion of Longlegswhere she plays Lee Harker, a new FBI recruit hired to investigate a series of unsolved murders, the actress told Hollywood Reporter of her desire to play this character, and Nicolas Cage's admiration for her acting. Asked about this “It Follows 2”, she said:
“I contacted David Robert Mitchell and we started talking about it. Actually, he wasn't the first person to confirm to me that a sequel to It Follows was in the works. I think it was because he wasn't sure at that point. He was probably working on the script, and he's very picky. But my team started the negotiations. (…) I was sent the script and it's incredible. Neon [ndlr : la boîte de production] came after and that's it!”
She added that the scenario was far from what she had imagined: “I was very surprised when I read the script.”
This is not the first time that the actress has teased this sequel. A month ago, she had held out for Collider similar remarks:
“It's going to be bigger, darker, and even crazier. Totally crazy. It was a crazy read.”
