The American saga directed by Kevin Costner is pulling on the reins and making a stop, the duration of which is still undetermined.

SO that Horizon: An American Saga had everything to please Western fans (colonists, soldiers, Natives, bounty hunters and outlaws), the conquest of the West revisited by Kevin Costner must take a break, the fault of the public who shunned it in theaters.

Judged by some critics as a film adaptation of the series Yellowstone – of which the actor is also the creator – and an assembly of several episodes put end to end, whether in the United States or in France, the passionate work of Kevin Costner struggles to find its viewers. In cowboy country, it is even being called a flop. Released on July 3 in France, the feature film got away without a scratch during the first weekend following its release, managing to climb to the top of the podium. But for its first week of operation, facing the titans Inside Out 2 And the count of Monte Cristo as well as the horror of A Quiet Place: Day 1the actor, here director, gets his feet tangled in the stirrup and falls to fifth place.

With $26 million generated at the global box office, the $100 million put into the production, including $38 straight out of Costner's pocket, is far from being repaid.

Cannes 2024: Kevin Costner's crazy ambition on Horizon

Faced with these figures, producers Territory Pictures and New Line Cinema decided this week to postpone the release of the second chapter to a later date in the United States… which will therefore also be released in France.

Asked about this decision, which may have come as a surprise, the producers said that the aim was to give the public more time to experience the first part before discovering it in theaters. Horizon 2. The latter was in fact planned for August across the Atlantic and September in France – just two months after the release of the first chapter. With this new deal, Americans will be able to discover the film from their sofa from July 16 on PVOD. Furiosaanother Warner Bros. production that did not perform well in theaters, was offered for premium rental and purchase a month after its release, at prices of $25 and $30.

Following the steps taken by the producers, the French distributor Metropolitan Films has announced that it will also postpone the release of this second part to a later date in 2024, “in application of this strategy”.

In a press release, Territory Pictures remains optimistic:

“Kevin made this film for those who love cinema and want to travel. The support we have received from fans, and from the theaters that have experienced this first chapter, only strengthens our belief in ourselves and the films we have produced, and we thank them for coming aboard this adventure. We welcome the opportunity to extend our window of opportunity, as we know it will only enhance the experience of seeing Horizon 2.”

Kevin Costner has already written the scripts for Chapters 3 and 4, but they have not yet been filmed. And this twist could be taken into account for their eventual releases. In the meantime, this gives viewers the opportunity to discover this epic still showing in theaters.
