Minnesota Democratic Gov. Tim Walz came under fire on social media last week after telling a group of Democrats that socialism was what some would call “good neighborliness” in a clip that received renewed attention after he was announced as Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2024 running mate Tuesday morning.
“Never turn away from our progressive values,” said the The Minnesota Democrat said at a “White Dudes for Harris” call last week. “One man’s socialism is another man’s good neighbor.”
The comment was widely criticized by conservatives on Twitter, including Ilya Shapiro, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, who answered on X with “weird,” a reference to recent Democratic attacks on Republican presidential candidate J.D. Vance and former President Trump.
“The neighborhood killed members of my family,” said journalist Karol Markowicz posted on X.

The clip resurfaced Tuesday morning, shortly after Walz was nominated for vice president by Harris.
“This is the most radical ticket in American history,” Republican Sen. Mike Lee said on X.
“This is the most extreme ticket in history,” posted the Senate Republicans’ X account.

“Walz’s claim that socialism is simply ‘good neighborliness’ is a lie that ignores the harsh realities that countless families faced under socialist regimes,” Virginia Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares said on X.
“I have had members of my own family arrested and imprisoned in Cuba, victims of a system that masquerades oppression as community service,” he continued. “Socialism crushes dissent, strips people of their freedoms, and fails to deliver on its ‘promises.’ It is a direct threat to our American ideals.”
“The only self-deprecating quote against a progressive I’ve seen in a long time!” author Justin Hart posted on X.
Fox News Digital reached out to Walz's office and the Harris campaign for comment but did not receive a response.
Walz, 60, was named Harris' running mate after weeks of speculation that saw many pundits believe Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro would ultimately be selected.

Walz is a former National Guard member and former teacher who has emerged in recent weeks as an effective defender of Harris. He grew up in a small town in Nebraska and also coached football and was a union member at a Minnesota high school before entering politics. He recently attacked former President Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance as “weirdos,” a viral insult that Harris’ campaign has adopted.
A former congressman from a Republican-leaning district, Walz has proven his appeal among rural and white voters, even as he also championed progressive policies as governor, such as free school lunches and expanded paid leave for workers. While Minnesota is a solidly Democratic state, it is close to Wisconsin and Michigan, two crucial battlegrounds.
