The former president had barely begun to inflame the crowd when five shots were heard and he collapsed, surrounded by secret service agents.
“And then the worst president in the history of our country took office. And look what happened to our country. Probably 20 million people [came in illegally]. And you know, this is a little old, this chart… this chart is a few months old. And if you really want to see something that sad, look at what happened…” Trump said before gunshots rang out.
As they led him away, with what appeared to be blood on his head, he raised his arms in defiance.
Trump was heard telling his security team, “Let me get my shoes,” as they pulled him to his feet and pushed him off stage.
The frantic scene showed rally-goers rushing for the exit after gunshots rang out.
It is unclear who the shooter might be or whether any arrests have been made.
In a statement, Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said they had “implemented protective measures.”
“An incident occurred on the evening of July 13 at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania,” Guglielmi said. “The Secret Service has protective measures in place and the former president is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and more information will be released as it becomes available.”
