Chelsea boss Frank Lampard exposed the problems at the club after his team were beaten 4-1 by Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Thursday.
Frank Lampard has been openly critical of his players and admitted that Chelsea need a “reset” this summer after Manchester United defeated them on Thursday night.
United cruised to a 4–1 victory at Old Trafford to secure a place in the next season’s Champions League. In stark contrast, the defeat left Chelsea 12th in the Premier League, with just 43 points from 37 games.
The Blues had their chances against Erik ten Hag’s side, but they simply didn’t take them and were punished at the other end. A free header from Casemiro and a flick from Anthony Martial sent United to half-time 2-0 up after Mykhaylo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher missed big scoring chances.
Bruno Fernandes scored a penalty after being brought down by Wesley Fofana before Marcus Rashford capitalized on another mistake to make it 4-0 with a rebound against Kepa Arrizabalaga. Joao Félix got a consolation goal with a fine finish on the counter-attack, but it did little to change the narrative of the night.
“It’s a simple thing to say, but any team that wins in the Premier League has them as a base, because without them tactics don’t matter,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “Training well every day, trying to get better, being a true collective unit.
“There are some variables for the players, everyone talks about the swamp squad and I understand that it is difficult for the coaches this year at the club, I understand it because I have lived through nine league games.
“Sometimes you can say maybe it’s a factor, if you want to call it an excuse, but as a player you have to put that aside and focus on your own game. Since I joined, I quickly understood that some of the collective standards, and it is for the individuals within it to realize who they are, this is not a blanket, we just have to find the reasons why the club is where it is. is in, and there are many.
“It’s not just about pointing fingers at the players because it’s definitely not a lack of effort tonight, but you build up credit through your training and your preparation, and you build a resilience.
“I was lucky to be a player here for many years and you can look at the group and the player next to you and know that they have worked to their standards and everything is there to trust each other.
“It’s a bad year for the club, and a lot of clubs have these years where we’ve had massive success over the last 20 years or whatever, but the important thing is to get to the bottom of how it gets better.
“He needs a restart, the club will move on in the summer in terms of how the team looks, and as a Chelsea player, where we want to be, everything has to improve to get to the level.”
Lampard will take charge of his last game as Chelsea’s caretaker boss against Newcastle on Sunday before Mauricio Pochettino takes over this summer.
