TO HOPEFULLY FINDING A CAUSE. ON MONDAY, THE COMMUNITY CAME TOGETHER TO REMEMBER THE SIX LIVES THAT WERE LOST IN THAT DEADLY HOUSE EXPLOSION IN PLUM IN 2023. AND WHILE LEADERS WITH THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY EMERGENCY SERVICES SAYS THEY HAVE NOT YET DETERMINED A CAUSE, THE INVESTIGATION IS STILL ACTIVE. WHEN ASKED THE POSSIBILITY OF A HOT WATER TANK IN THE BASEMENT PLAYING A ROLE IN THE EXPLOSION, CHIEF MATTHEW BROWN SAYS IT IS ONE OF MANY THINGS THEY ARE LOOKING AT. BUT BROWN SAYS THIS IS SOMETHING THAT CAN’T BE RUSHED. WE CANNOT PROCEED WITH BLINDERS ON. WE’VE GOT TO BE VERY FOCUSED ON EVERYTHING THAT HAS THE POTENTIAL. UNTIL WE CAN DISCOUNT IT. IN JULY, WE WERE TOLD BY THE PENNSYLVANIA PUBLIC UTILITY COMMISSION THAT THEY FOUND NO EVIDENCE LINKING THE EXPLOSION TO PUBLIC UTILITIES. BROWN SAYS TUESDAY WAS THE FIRST DAY WHERE 48 ENTITIES MET TO DISCUSS THE EVIDENCE GATHERED FOLLOWING THAT EXPLOSION, AND DETERMINED A PLAN OF ACTION TO PROCESS IT. AND THAT COULD MEAN SEVERAL THINGS. WHAT TESTING CAN BE DONE? DOES IT REQUIRE METALLURGICAL TESTING? DO WE NEED TO ACTUALLY PUT IT THROUGH A PROCESS TO EVALUATE WHETHER OR NOT A VALVE WORKS OR FUNCTIONS PROPERLY, OR AN ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE RELATED TO AN IGNITION? THOSE ARE THE DETAILS THAT THAT GROUP OF 48 WILL DEVELOP. THOSE PROTOCOLS FOR TESTING OF EACH PIECE OF EVIDENCE. BUT BROWN SAYS IT’S ABOUT RESULTS AND SAYS THEY ARE DETERMINED TO GET ANSWERS. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO TELL THAT NEIGHBORHOOD, TELL THAT FAMILY, TELL THOSE INDIVIDUALS SPECIFICALLY. THIS IS WHERE THIS IS WHAT CAUSED IT. NOW, BROWN SAYS THEY’LL BE DOING EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO FIND A CAUSE, TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY CAN BRING CLOSURE TO THOSE FAMILI

On Monday, the Plum community came together to remember the six lives that were lost in a deadly house explosion in August 2023.

While leaders with Allegheny County Emergency Services said they have not yet determined a cause of the explosion in the Rustic Ridge neighborhood, the investigation is still active.

When asked about the possibility of a hot water tank in the basement playing a role in the explosion, Chief Matthew Brown said it is one of many things they are looking at.

However, Brown added this is something that can’t be rushed.

“We cannot proceed with blinders on. We’ve got to be very focused on everything that has the potential until we can discount it,” Brown said.

In July, the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission said that they found no evidence linking the explosion to public utilities.

Brown said Tuesday was the first day where 48 different entities met to discuss the evidence gathered following that explosion and determine a plan of action to process it. He said this could mean several things.

“What testing can be done? Does it require metallurgical testing? Do we need to actually put it through a process to evaluate whether or not a valve works or functions properly, or an electrical appliance related to an ignition? Those are the details that that group of 48 will develop those protocols for testing of each piece of evidence,” Brown said.

However, Brown said it is about results and says they are determined to get answers.

“I want to be able to tell that neighborhood, tell that family, tell those individuals, specifically, this is what caused it,” Brown said.
