“I was given the choice and I preferred practical effects” confides the interpreter of Elphaba.

She is one of the big stars of this end of year in cinema. Cynthia Erivo impresses as Elphaba, a young witch born with green skin, facing Ariana Grande (Glinda) in Wicked. It must be said that the former Broadway star (The Color Purple) gave of himself for the role.

In an interview with Empire, Cynthia Erivo reveals that she really had green skin, on the set of the film. We gave her the choice and she asked for practical effects for Elphaba to live the experience in its entirety:

“There was the option to do special effects. I was asked if I wanted CGI or practical work, and I knew I wanted real effects, even before I started. Because I wanted to be able to look at my hands and see green hands. I wanted to look in the mirror and see a green face. I also wanted to see the reactions of other people seeing me as a green person, rather than myself. Obviously, this was going to influence my performance.

Cynthia Erivo admits that it took a lot of time every morning to do makeup. “But it was really comfortable as makeup! Depending on what we were doing during the day, it could take between 2.5 and 4.5 hours in the makeup chair..” And the actress admits that in the end, “It was like a second skin.” She insists:

“I never had any irritation. I think a lot of research went into finding out which green shade would work best. Finding which one would sit most correctly on my skin and how I could take care of my skin for that she's wearing makeup.”

Wicked is already a hit with 370 million dollars in revenue worldwide. The film has just been released in France.
