Pretzels are a salty, crunchy favorite among snackers.
But this Fourth of July, sweeten them up and show your patriotic pride with an innovative recipe from Midwest food blogger Cara Lanz.

FYI: While it's acceptable to use different shaped foods interchangeably in many recipes, it's important to purchase the checkerboard “snaps” pretzels to get the flag-inspired presentation.

Ingredients

- ¾ cup melted blue candy
- 3 ¼ teaspoons oil, divided
- Red, white and blue nuggets
Directions
1. Prepare two baking sheets with parchment paper or wax paper.
2. Melt the white candy melts with two teaspoons of oil in the microwave until smooth. Drop a few pretzels into the melted candy and turn to coat.
Using a fork, remove each pretzel from its coating and tap it on the side of the bowl to remove excess coating. Arrange pretzels horizontally on prepared baking sheets. Reheat coating if necessary.

3. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt red candy melts with ½ teaspoon oil until smooth. Using a spoon or a zip-top bag with the corner cut off, drizzle red chocolate over white chocolate-covered pretzels in horizontal stripes.
Place the pretzels in the refrigerator for 5 to 10 minutes to harden.
4. Line your work surface or baking sheets with clean sheets of parchment paper or wax paper.

5. In a medium microwave-safe bowl, melt the blue candy melts with ¾ teaspoon of the oil until smooth. One at a time, carefully remove the excess hardened red chocolate from the edges of each pretzel. Dip the left side of each pretzel into the melted blue candy melts.

6. Hold the dipped pretzel over a small bowl and sprinkle the wet blue coating with sprinkles, letting the excess fall into the bowl. Place it on the parchment paper to dry.
